• Question: Sallie, If someone has a seizure, how likely is it to be epiliepsy, or could it be a one-off?

      It depends on why they have the seizure – surveys have shown that 1 in 20 of us will have a seizure at some time in our lives. That doesn’t mean that all of those people will go on to develop epilepsy – in fact most of them wont – it will just be a one off thing that never happens again. Lots of children who do go on to have a few more seizures when they are young, grow out of it when they become teenagers and never have one as an adult – BUT it depends on why you had the seizure in the first place – if something has gone permanetly wrong in the brain or it hasn’t developed quite right then someone may go on to have more seizures and develop epilepsy.
