If we can develop a new drug to stop people feeling pain then it will help millions of people. How many people do you know that suffer from back pain or arthritic pain – those are the people that we hope our new drug will work on. Long term pain is a very difficult thing to live with, people get depressed and stop doing all the things they enjoyed doing as they are in too much pain. If we can treat that with something that is safe and has no side effects then their lifes can go back to normal.

When people have brain surgery it is really important that we take out as much of the bad bit and leave as much of the good bit behind. Unfortuntely we can’t tell which bits are good/bad just by looking at the brain – they all look the same. My research helps the surgeon work out where the margins are between the good and the bad so he can plan the best possible operation for each patient.

It helps by making diagnosis faster and more accurate, less chance of getting false results and gives clinical staff a better picture and helps them to give better treatment.
