As Scientist we all make discoveries, each of us at some point will have done a research dissertation and generally they are something that has never been done before. Mine was looking at how the skins immune resoponse changed under different nutritional strains. Although the result was accademic, I did discover that the immune response is better when well fed, healthy and un damaged. In my current role I do do research, those discoveries are a joint effort and we are still working on them.

Yes – I came up with an equation to predict what would happen to someone’s memory after we removed a diseased part of their brain. We now use that equation to help prepare people for what is going to hapen to them when they come in for brain surgery.

As I test newly invented and made drugs I make discoveries all the time, but it’s not just me. The chemists had to come up with the idea for the new drug and how to make it in the first place. The other biologists I work with help out too. Science si all about discoveries, it’s just most aren’t big enough to make it on to the 10 O’clock News but just lead us along to the next discovery.
